Life Task: strategies and actions
Artemisa, Cuba – In the territory, the Science, Technology and Environment Section (CITMA) undertakes actions to mitigate the effects of climate change, through ‘Tarea Vida’ (Life Task).
The most important strategy in the municipality lies fundamentally in the agricultural sector, which guarantees the food security of the country. Among the measures are: the diversification of crops, the improvement of soil conditions, as well as the introduction of varieties resistant to high temperatures. On the other hand, it is necessary to plan, in the determined terms, the processes of urban reorganization of the threatened settlements and infrastructures, in correspondence with the economic conditions of the territory.
One of the main environmental problems is associated with terrestrial waters. This situation is given by the level of contamination, which significantly affects the poor management of solid and liquid waste which are decisive factors in terms of the quality of the waters of the Ariguanabo River, therefore, the interest to reforest the hydro -reguladora del Río Ariguanabo, belonging to the Hydrographic Basin of the same name, which is intended to be declared as a Protected Natural Landscape. This basin is also one of the most important basins for water supply in Havana. The problem of the rational use of water is crucial for the population, so that alternatives for distribution are applied, as well as measures for the use of irrigation in the different productive forms.
The Life Task includes five strategic actions and 11 tasks, all aimed at counteracting the effects on vulnerable areas. They were approved on April 25, 2018 by the Council of Ministers and are a priority for the country’s environmental policy.
