Heroes more than cracks

En este artículo:
From the 5.1 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale of Tuesday, June 29, Artemisa, San Cristóbal and the Comandante Pinares General Hospital have more than their cracks, their heroes: unlimited and quiet professionals who, like other times , they risked their lives to save others.
He was at home, but, as fast as the earthquake, he was among the first to arrive. Despite his sensitivity as a doctor, to be useful, even trembling inside, he took his camera and published the first images of aid, despair, assistance, ambulances, firefighters, cracks, collapses, hopes …

Shortly after, and with thousands of reproductions, José René Morales Núñez, a 26-year-old doctor with whom I have 238 friends in common on Facebook, became (for me) the best of the chroniclers.

Even when following the event minute by minute, and moistening our eyes with the tenderness of Dr. Enrique Padrón Álvarez, who manipulated the Ambu resuscitator for manual ventilation, so that little Yaslin Calderín López (four years old, with a disease Degenerative Central Nervous System) were not lack oxygen, while two rescuers carried the stretcher from the third floor.

‘”Like Professor Jerry (that’s how his students call him), there were lots of professionals who assisted their patients in the middle of the lawn: they channeled a vein in the parking lot; they finished a surgery in a makeshift room, but with more security than the operating room; or they sutured a wound in the portal of the guardhouse ‘?, he wrote in his post.

“They were there, with a white coat wet with sweat and bloody sleeves, afraid, but there”, writes José René and thanked his colleagues. And now I want to tell that story among the heroes of that morning that marks a turning point , since 1880 (previous earthquake of 6.0 in those region ) the people of San Cristobal have been on solid ground.

Dozens of specialists assess the hospital damages , inaugurated on May 17, 1982 by our Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, and in 2021 has about 400 beds, 32 specialties, 39 services and almost 2,000 workers, and after the earthquake it only offers Emergency service.

I don’t even have a photo of him there, one of my “heroes”, since he was always behind the camera. “I did nothing. My coworkers were the ones who saved human lives, “he wrote to me on WhatsApp. And, of course, I agree with him.

Did he do nothing ? He did a lot! He left graphic and written testimony of an episode in which our Health staff, from San Cristóbal, Comandante Pinares hospital and the rest of the institutions where Artemisa´s patients were evacuated, show that ‘?after this earthquake’? more than cracks, we have heroes left.
