Ecuador: Poll Places Leftist Candidate First in 2nd Round of Election
Quito – The candidate for president in the second round of elections in Ecuador, Lenin Moreno, is today ahead of his rival, the ex-banker Guillermo Lasso, by 18 points to, according to a survey released by the Center for Social Research.
The study, carried out by the Center for Social Research, places the representative of the government PAIS Alliance Movement in first place with 59 percent of possible votes, while Lasso reaches 41 percentage points.
According to the data, blank and invalid votes are maintained at a projection of 10 percent, estimated similar to that obtained in general elections last February 19.
The survey, revealed by the digital site Opina Ecuador, was conducted from February 22 to 24, with a sample of 2,500 people, questioned at the national level.
When 100 percent of general votes were counted Sunday, February 19, Moreno scored 39.36 percent of the valid votes, while Lasso, his closest rival, finished with 28.09 points.
The Ecuadorian former vice-president was less than a point to be declared the definitive winner and next Head of State of this South American nation.
According to the statutes, to decree a winner in the presidential jury, more than 50 percentage points or a minimum of 40, with a difference of more than 10 percent over the second place are required.
Moreno and Lasso will go to second round next April 2, in the midst of a scenario in which the leftist government candidate calls for peace and tranquility, while the representative of the opposition and his followers incite violence.
