Former President Lula Serves 90 Days of Political Imprisonment
Brasilia – Former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has spent 90 days of political imprisonment at the headquarters of the Federal Police (FP) in the city of Curitiba, in the state of Parana.
Tried in the first instance by Federal Judge Sergio Moro and sentenced to 12 years and one month in prison by the Regional Federal Court of the Fourth Region (TRF-4), Lula stills leads all surveys on vote intention in the presidential elections in October.
In a letter published this month, the founder and historic leader of the Workers’ Party (PT) repeated that he has not committed any crimes, so he will be the candidate for the presidency of the Republic until ‘at least one piece of material evidence that tarnish my innocence’ is presented.
If they do not want me to be president, the simplest way to achieve so is to have the courage to practice democracy and defeat me at the polls, he suggested.
Lula also denounced the judicial maneuvers of which he has been a victim over the past few days at the Federal Supreme Court (STF), promoted by Minister Edson Fachin.
