China: Cuba Urges Peaceful Safe and Cooperative Use of Internet
Beijing – Cuba has called today for the peaceful and legitimate use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) for the development and welfare of humanity after participating in the third World Internet Conference in Wuzhen in East China’s Zhejiang.
Jorge Luis Perdomo, Deputy Minister of the Cuban Ministry of Communications, also stressed the role of the Conference to coordinate positions at the global level on substantive issues of information and communication technologies, cyber-security and internet governance.
Perdomo emphasized how the use of ICTs has expanded conditions for the socio-economic development of humanity, hastened productivity and improved the citizens’ quality of life.
He also considered the safe use of these applied sciences in a fundamental matter for the international security and that of the states.
The use of the internet should have a democratic and participatory international governance, based on the United Nations Charter, international law and multilateralism, as well as complying with what was agreed in the summits held in Geneva and Tunisia, he emphasized.
He also made calls to avoid the use of ICTs for subversive, political, military and criminal purposes such as the theft of information in cyberspace.
In the specific case of Cuba, Perdomo explained that the Caribbean island has been committed to the promotion of the international cooperation at the political, operational and technical level to expand national capacity in the prevention and mitigation of cybernetic events harmful to national and global security.
