Regatta between Cuba and the US Restarted after 60 Years
Washington – For the 1st time in 60 years a group of sailboat navigators are travelling from the US city of St. Petersburgh towards the island of Cuba, in a regatta that started Tuesday morning.
After a day for preparations, 80 sailboats sailed from St. Petersburgh, Florida, with more than 550 people in total, including a boat with the Cuban flag that sailed from Havana Monday, to join the group from Florida.
‘This is a good chance to be together, and learn new skills,’ said war veteran Robert Schaefer, a co-founder of an organization called American Freedom Destillery, one of the organizers for the regatta.
This will be a travel for two days, restarting a traditional regatta, which was celebrated between 1930 and 1959 between the cities of St. Petersburgh and Havana.
